German Kitchen Showcase: Part 2: Pronorm Kitchens

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

In the next part of our feature on German Kitchens, we are taking a look at the range of kitchens from Pronorm.

Pronorm are well known for their contemporary kitchen designs with that typical German look.  Clean lines, functional design and high quality manufacturing have seen Pronorm grow to be one of the big players in the middle to high end kitchen market.  Pronorm have a rich history in furniture manufacturing, having begun production back in 1945.  The name Pronorm was introduced in 1972 and their kitchens can now be found all over the world.

So let’s take a look at some of the Pronorm range:

Pronorm Y-Line

Pronorm Y-Line

The Y-line by Pronorm, shown here in white gloss, is a handle-less kitchen with sleek lines that fits beautifully with contemporary living.  What I love about this kitchen is the sense of tranquility you get from it and how it blends in rather than take over the room.  For anyone with a small or dark kitchen, consider a kitchen like the Y-line in white gloss.  It will give a more spacious feel to the room by blending in and allowing light (whether natural or artificial) to bounce off it.  The Y-line also comes with thick end panels which frame the doors and streamline the look. Initially, the same doors were planned for the exteriors, but due to space constrictions, wooden gates made to measure doorways perfectly were placed instead. This range from Pronorm is also available in vanilla, cubanit, anthracite and black.

Also in the Y-line range:

Proline 128

Pronorm Proline Kitchen

The Proline range, as you can see from the photo, can be fitted with handles or without.  If planning without handles, a touch opening system would be used instead of a finger rail.  Again, the main part of this kitchen is white, but the island shown is in black gloss.  The reason for showing this particular photograph of the Proline range is to highlight the open shelving design on the main kitchen run.  The beauty of this design is that it takes away that heavy kitchen look and lends itself perfectly towards an open plan living area.

Also in the Proline 128 range:

Pronorm Classic LinePronorm img_classic_hn_01

The Classicline range from Pronorm is an extremely flexible range.  The idea is that homeowners can choose a modern or classic look for their kitchen depending on their preferred look.  The kitchen above left, is a mix of both titanium and teak, with the teak warming up what might otherwise be a cold looking kitchen.  As we have said before, mixing and matching is a key trend at the moment.  The kitchen to the right is a more classic or traditional kitchen.  The doors centre panel is v-grooved to give a country look with the vanilla colour being warm and inviting.

Also in the Classicline range:

A Touch Of Glass With These Trendy Kitchen Splashbacks

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Sometimes the smallest detail can turn your average kitchen into the WOW factor that everybody wants.  One increasingly popular way of adding an interesting twist to your kitchen is by adding a glass splashback ranging from a plain single colour to an elaborate and funky design.

Choosing a splashback that really livens up the room and creates a focal point will mean your kitchen will be the subject of envious comments from your friends and family.

Floral Glass SplashbackFlower Glass Splashback

The glass splashbacks above show how creative you can get.  All four of these floral themes are from Splashbacks.ie and can be made in a huge range of designs and colours.  If you are a little bit daring, a floral pattern might just be what your kitchen has been crying out for.

Or maybe you want to release the animal in you.  If so, how about this zebra print glass splashback from CP Group in the UK.  They also have this really trendy pink design on black glass for a little bit more of a feminine touch.

blue glass backsplashgreen glass backsplash

You could however play it a little safer if you prefer and choose a plain coloured splashback.  Most splashback manufacturers work off RAL colour charts so the choice of colour is endless.  The two glass splashbacks above are in blue and green shades and are from Mirror and Glassworx in Limerick.  You can see from the photographs that the plain colours are much more subtle, especially if you plan on using glass on a full wall as opposed to just behind your hob or cooker.

The beauty of using glass for your splashback is the endless designs and colours available.  If you are looking to give your existing or new kitchen a real lift and add a splash of colour, the you should seriously consider using glass.

Compact Appliances for 2050 – Electrolux Design Lab

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Swedish appliance giant Electrolux presents four of its ‘appliances of the future’ in the House of the Future, sponsored by Virgin Media, at this year’s Grand Designs Live London (30th April till 8th May 2011, ExCeL, Docklands).

About Electrolux Design Lab: the 2010 competition focused on creative solutions for compact living, which is why companies like Pittsburgh Appliance Repairs aim to provide the best service that they can to avoid people from buying unnecessary new appliances. Electrolux Design had come in an association with a solar company in San Diego in ‘05 so that it could expand its sectors onto that emerging technology. The 2010 brief asked industrial design students to consider how people will prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes in the homes of 2050, when 74%* of the global population are predicted to live in an urban environment. Eight finalist were picked from 1300 entries. Four of these eight finalists, including the winner ‘The Snail’ can be seen at Grand Designs Live London in the House of the Future sponsored by Virgin Media. Along with them, cleaning appliances such as vacuum cleaner will be a big help for future generations. See the full line up of the vacuums by Dyson and Miele at Blue Mountain Vacuum online store.

Electrolux’s The Snail, Peter Alwin, India – Micro Induction Heating (Winner of Electrolux Design Lab 2010)

The Snail is a portable heating and cooking device based on magnetic induction processes. Such is the size and versatility of the Snail, it can be stuck directly on to a pot, a pan, a mug etc. to heat the contents. This reduces the amount of space required for conventional cooking whilst adding portability to the process. Powered by a high density sugar crystal battery, the Snail converts the energy from the sugar, heating up a coil to conduct the magnetic induction process to the utensil.

Maintaining your grease removal traps helps keep your business running smoothly while protecting our waterways. That’s why we empty and clean your interceptors and traps on every visit.

Inbuilt sensors detect the food type being heated so as to automatically adjust the time and temperature. A simple touch sensitive display with interface helps to monitor the process.

Electrolux Clean Closet, Michael Edenius, Sweden – All in One Laundry Concept

The Clean Closet is essentially just that – a closet that cleans clothing. Textiles are scanned for impurities and cleaned accordingly with molecular technology that removes dirt and odours. The concept replaces the laundry basket, the wash¬ing machine, and drying cabinet to save space and, as no water is used in the process, is kinder to the environment.

Electrolux Eco Cleaner, Ahi Andy Mohsen, Iran – Portable, Compact Dishwasher

The Eco Cleaner is a portable dishwasher and composter that uses ultrasonic waves to ionise food and turn it in to reusable waste. Ahi Andy Mohsen’s concept is designed for use within the increasing numbers of single households and specifically meeting dual predictions: that future food will be supplied in capsule form (thus reducing the required size of vessels to prepare and eat from); and that there will be reduced time for household chores. The Eco Cleaner is simultaneously green and space efficient.

Electrolux External Refrigerator, Nicolas Hubert, France – External Chilling

Two years in China provided the inspiration for Nicolas Hubert’s external refrigerator. Fixed directly on the outside wall of residential buildings, the concept is an elaboration on a way of life in northern China where food is kept on balconies in the winter to save space and energy. During cold seasons and at night, the low external temperatures are used to provide the right climate for items in the fridge. During warmer weather, the sun is used to transform light into energy through solar panels Nicolas reflects Electrolux design values: the shape and finish are kept pure and simple so as to ensure easy integration with the external urban environment, whilst a range of colours and ambient lighting further facilitate this.

German Kitchen Showcase: Part 1: Nolte Kitchens

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

In the first part of our focus on German kitchens, we are taking a look at a kitchen manufacturer that has grown over the last 50 years to become a recognisable brand in Europe and around the world.

Nolte Kitchens have dealers all over the world, with a selection based here in Ireland.  Though they produce classic and country style kitchens, it is with their modern and contemporary kitchens where they have really made their mark.

Lets take a look at a selection of kitchens from the Nolte range:

Nolte Chicago High Gloss Purple

The Nolte Chicago in high gloss purple, as shown above, is a lovely example of what Nolte are all about.  A contemporary design while mixing and matching colours is a key trend in current kitchen design and style.  This is something I love about Nolte.  They seem to effortlessly blend and match colours and wood textures to create inviting and elegant kitchens.  You will also notice the use of lift up wall cabinet doors and open illuminated shelves that break up what could be a monotonous run of wall cabinets.  The illuminated shelves also gives extra light in the kitchen.

Nolte High Gloss Magnolia

In the Nolte High Gloss Magnolia, you can again see the common theme of mixing and matching.  This time Nolte have match the bright hue of magnolia with a darker wood grain to create contrast.  The t-shaped island unit creates plenty of work space while still managing to fit a breakfast bar for 3 people.  The breakfast bar is a key feature of Nolte designs, emphasising the fact that the kitchen is now the social hub of the home.

Nolte Toscana in Pear WoodNolte High Wood Boston Cherry

Some of the photographs above show the wide choice available with Nolte Kitchens.  The Toscana in Pear Wood has a warm hue to it with the High Wood in Boston Cherry offering a darker and richer alternative.  Whether it is a contemporary or modern kitchen you want, or a classic or country style, Nolte might have an option to suit you.  You can be guaranteed that your new kitchen will have the efficiency and ease of use that is typical of German manufacturing.
